A Special training with Dr. John Pachankis
March 8th and 9th, 2023 (9:00-15:00)
Ben-Gurion University
LGBTQ-affirmative CBT
John Pachankis (he/him) is the Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Public Health and directs Yale’s LGBTQ Mental Health Initiative, which serves as a home for scholarship devoted to understanding and improving the mental health of LGBTQ populations in the US and around the world. He is the primary developer of LGBTQ-affirmative CBT for sexual and gender minority adults. LGBTQ-affirmative CBT is a 16-week treatment that seeks to improve sexual and gender minority (SGM) people’s ability to cope with stressors related to their identities (i.e., minority stress), and reduce mental health problems. The treatment raises awareness of the psychological harms of minority stress, builds self-affirming thinking patterns, and facilitates healthy behavioral habits to replace avoidant coping behaviors. The treatment often leads to strong and sustained reductions in depression, anxiety, suicidality, substance use, and HIV risk as evidenced across several randomized controlled trials. Dr. Pachankis has published 150+ scientific papers on LGBTQ mental health and stigma and co-edited the Handbook of Evidence-Based Mental Health Practice with Sexual and Gender Minorities published by Oxford University Press.

The training will introduce participants to minority stress theory and the unique stressors faced by sexual and gender minority people. Then, Dr. Pachankis will systematically present each of the treatment modules, as well address participants’ questions about implementation. The training, designed for mental health professionals and trainees, will be two full days, from 9:00-15:00, and will take place on Ben-Gurion University’s campus. Participation is free of charge; however, pre-registration is required. There will not be an option to register on the day of the training. We ask that those who come remain for the entire day. It is possible to come to Day 1 only, or to both days. It is not possible to come to only the second day. Places are limited and will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
Those interested should contact the clinic at communityclinic@post.bgu.ac.il to receive a registration link and more detailed information about the training.
